South-East Asia is home to a number of very large metropolises, whose rapid growth, along with the region's economic emergence since the 1980s, has led to increasing management and planning difficulties. Urban transport, housing, air pollution and the risk of flooding are some of the main concerns facing the inhabitants of Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, while Singapore appears (wrongly?) to be a model of sustainable urbanisation.
