The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a transcription of one of Stevenson's nightmares. In his essay "A Chapter on Dreams", Stevenson talks about the role of dreams, and therefore of the unconscious, in his writing. He explains that at night, in his sleep, little creatures in his head, which he calls Brownies, work for him and make up stories, which he then transcribes. The actors will be these brownies, bringing the drama of Jekyll and Hyde to life every night. The adaptation is based around tableaux that follow the rhythm of the novel and its chapters. The play is structured in two parts. The first eight tableaux are faithful to the first eight chapters of the play, retracing the story of the novel. Then, in the same way as the letters from Lanyon and Jekyll at the end of the book, two tableaux explaining the plot. This choice of dramatic structure was justified by the desire to maintain the dynamic of the work and its suspense, of which only Stevenson has the secret.
