Founded solely by the Emperor Augustus, Autun was built at the end of the 1st century BC to accommodate the Eduans from Bibracte. "Sister and emulator of Rome" was Autun's motto. Augustodunum was one of the jewels in the crown of Gallo-Roman cultural and commercial life.
